The compact housing contains a fully professional processor-controlled charger with a three-stage TC/CC/CV charging process. It charges 1–2 Li-ion cells rated at 3.6 / 3.7 V, with any capacity, in sizes 10440, 14500, 14650, 16340, 17500, 17670, 18350, 18500, 18650 and 18700. It is also possible to charge one battery in size 20700 or 21700 – unprotected batteries only.
What does the TC/CC/CV charging method involve? It is a three-stage charging process for Li-ion cells that helps keep the cell in good condition by applying the appropriate current at each stage and ending the charging process at the right moment.
The individual stages of the TC/CC/CV process are:
TC phase: cells discharged below 2.85 V are “woken up” with a lower current.
CC phase: once 2.85 V has been reached, the cell is charged with a constant current of 0.5 A or 0.25 A (depending on the power source used).
CV phase: when the cell is almost fully charged, the charger switches to charging with a decreasing current until a voltage of 4.2 V is reached at the cell. Once 4.2 V has been reached, the charging process is complete – the battery is fully charged.
Batteries with a voltage of 4.1 V or higher are treated by the charger as charged. To fully charge such a battery, insert it into the charger before connecting the charger to the power supply. Charged batteries left in the charger will undergo the natural self-discharge process. Charging will resume when the battery voltage drops below 4.1 V.
The Xtar MC2 charger features a reactivation function for deeply discharged cells and cells with a voltage of 0 V. Many chargers available on the market are unable to charge such batteries. This is where the Xtar MC2 charger can help, as in many cases it can “rescue” such cells. Simply insert the deeply discharged battery into the MC2 charger as you would for normal charging – the charger will detect the discharged cell and attempt to reactivate it. Warning! Cells discharged below a certain level may suffer irreversible damage, and their reactivation may be impossible. Excessive discharge of Li-ion batteries should be avoided – it may significantly reduce their service life and capacity or result in complete failure.
Chargers from other manufacturers may significantly increase the temperature of the cells being charged. Excessive heating of the cells may cause them to wear out faster. When designing the MC2 charger, Xtar went one step further than the competition and solved this problem in a simple way: an external power supply is used. As a result, the temperature of the battery being charged in the MC2 increases by no more than 15 degrees.
The Xtar MC2 charger comes with a micro USB cable and a protective case that protects the charger during transport. A power supply is not included. To power the charger, any charger with a micro USB cable, e.g. a phone charger, or a charger with a USB socket, or a computer with an available USB port is sufficient. The recommended charger output is 1 A (1000 mA).
