MAINTENANCE and USE
Knowing when to replace your bike grips
Grip lifespan varies depending on use, conditions, and the quality of the grip itself. However, it's important to recognize the signs that it's time for replacement:
Wear:
Over time, all grips become thinner, especially where your hands exert the most pressure. If you start to feel the handlebars underneath more than usual, it's time for a new set.
Loss of traction:
Grips are designed to provide a secure grip for your hands. Over time, the surface patterns or textures can wear off, causing your hands to slip, especially when wet.
Hardening of rubber:
Over time, especially with exposure to the elements, the rubber or material of grips can harden, reducing their shock-absorbing properties. Hard grips can cause discomfort while riding.
Steering wheel rotation:
Grips that twist or shift on the handlebar can be dangerous. While this can sometimes be fixed with adjustments or added adhesive, it often indicates a loss of internal grip integrity.
Comfort and fatigue:
If you experience fatigue, numbness or discomfort in your hands while riding and it's not related to other factors such as bike fit or riding position, it may be due to worn grips.
